Case Study: Industrial Hygiene Expertise Keeps Difficult Renovation Project on Track
As any experienced project manager can tell you, building renovation projects can quickly be derailed by unforeseen conditions if you’re not careful, and it’s the rare project that doesn’t have at least one element of added difficulty.
So when the project manager of a large-scale downtown Los Angeles building renovation effort reached out to Omega Environmental for help, we were able to put a wide array of industrial hygiene and construction safety expertise to work to help mitigate potential risks and bring the project to a successful and safe conclusion.
Environmental Monitoring Keeps High-Risk Renovation Project on Track
Among the challenges the project manager faced was the fact that sections of the building would remain open throughout the construction renovation project’s duration, creating the need for ongoing monitoring of air quality and other potential environmental threats to building occupants. These risks came with the need for ongoing communication to keep construction managers, tenants, employees – and especially parents using an onsite daycare center – in the loop. Here are a few of the other complications that had to be managed:
- The open daycare center overlooked the demolition zone
- A first floor restaurant also remained in operation throughout the course of the project
- Air quality threats included asbestos, lead dust, cement dust, and other construction dust and debris
- Airborne mold spores from water-impacted building materials
- Other health threats included noise intrusion into the occupied areas of the building
